Abstract:

A study of the use of constant current measurements to help develop future electrocoat formulations suited for zirconium oxide substrates is described. In addition to the challenges of coating a non-uniform, nano pretreatment with a highly conductive substrate, it is expected that the ecoat still has good throwpower and deposits at the desired film thickness with uniformity. The increased Farrady cage effect of  ZrO substrates known as ZrO shielding requires a modified system to accomplish this. Using the 4 box throwpower test, a series of formulations are screened for deposition properties and throwpower. This work describes how to overcome these challenges.
